Notes |
- "Pioneer Families of Anderson County Prior to 1900" (Texas), published by
Anderson County Genealogical Society, Sept. 1984 gives the following
information on GOODWIN KILLION, p 310 (written by Gladys Stovall Armstrong):
Goodwin Killion was born 9 February 1790 in South Carolina. He was licensed
to preach in the M. E. Methodist Church in Blount, AL, USA 1821. He
married Jane Tharp, 9 August 1808 in Jefferson, TN, USA . He and Jane lived in
Blount County for many years and most of their children were born there.
About 1836 he took his family and with at least one brother, William, set out
for Texas. For the next few years, where he lived depended on the Indians,
when they would be real bad in a county, he would move to a joining county to
protect his family; these included what is now Anderson, Rusk, and Cherokee
and Nacogdoches and Houston Counties. Goodwin Killion was a brave Indian
fighter, and was badly injured once. It has been written that he was killed
by the Indiana in "The Encyclopedia of Texas, by E. A. Davis and E. H. Grobe;
however, this is not true, he was left for dead by them but he lived many more
years, and he died with cancer of the face, after suffering with it for
fifteen years, and is so published in the "Texas Christian Advocate".
His wife, Jane, died 3 March 1843, and is buried in a private cemetery in
Anderson County, Texas, on property that still belongs to a Killion. After
Jane's death, Goodwin remarried 30 March 1849 to Mrs. Clarissa Moore. Goodwin
Killion died 14 January and was buried beside his first wife, Jane. His grave
used to be marked with a big rock, with GOODWIN carved on it, but it is no
longer there. Jane has a headstone and it says she was age 59 at death. The
children of Goodwin and Jane Killion are:
1. John Anderson, b 7 March 1806, White County TN, d. 16 Oct 1895, bur. in
private cemetery, m. Nancy Jane More
2. William, b. 1810, d. 1870, m. Delila Morton
3. Melenda, M. Uriahs Nesmith
4. Thomas, m. Charlelle Burnes
5. Priscella, m. Jesse Morton
6. Perry T., m. (1) Martha Minchew, m. (2) Rebecca Yates
7. Nancy, m.Benjamin Easley
8. Daniel, m. (1) Sarah, m. (2) Elizabeth Nesbit
9. James M., m. Elizabeth Palmer
10. John A., m. Elizabeth
Possible parents for Goodwin are: William Killan and Mary Goodwin (m. 1788). Willliam was a son of Andreas Killan.
